つらいことや恥ずかしいことがあった後も、自信や誇りを持って振る舞うこと。恥ずかしがらず堂々とするという意味。

人を励ます時によく使います。失敗や非難があっても、プライドや自信を忘れないでというニュアンスがあります。同じ意味で「下を向くな」とも言います。
