Permanecer detrás de otros en vez de avanzar, generalmente por inseguridad o falta de ganas de participar; también significa dudar en hacer algo.

Informal, se usa tanto para situações físicas (quedarse atrás del grupo) como emocionais (dudar en actuar). Común en instrucciones o para describir a alguien tímido o inseguro. No indica rechazo fuerte, solo cierta duda o relutancia.
