상대방을 공개적으로 존중하거나 체면을 세워 주는 것, 창피를 피하거나 사회적 인정을 위해 사용된다.

중국 등 아시아 문화에서 온 표현으로, 긍정(존중) 또는 부정(아부) 의미 모두 가능하다. 실제 '얼굴'을 준다는 뜻이 아니다.
