Her zaman gayri resmi; genellikle olumsuz cümlelerde ('don’t give a hoot') kullanılır. Anlamı 'care' ile aynıdır. 'Give a damn' daha serttir, 'give a darn' daha hafiftir. Olumlu cümlelerde nadiren görülür.
