غالبًا ما تستخدم بشكل غير رسمي وبدلالات سلبية؛ تشير إلى تصرفات سرية أو غير مهذبة. أمثلة مألوفة: 'eavesdrop on a conversation'. لا تخلط بينها وبين 'overhear' التي تعني سماع شيء بالصدفة وليس بقصد.
