To make someone unconscious by hitting them hard, often used in sports like boxing; it can also mean to make someone extremely tired, or to eliminate something or someone from a competition.

Mainly informal. Very common in boxing or sports ('knock out an opponent'). Also used figuratively: 'That medicine knocked me out' (made me very sleepy); 'They got knocked out in the first round' (eliminated). Not to be confused with 'knock on' (to strike a door).
