家も家族もいない、やせ細って世話のされていない子供を指します。特に同情的な意味合いがあります。

主に文学や物語、ファッションで使われる表現です。現代の日常会話ではあまり使いません。「waif look」は非常に細く弱々しい外見を指します。「孤児」とは異なり、特に放置や無視された印象を強調します。
