어떤 사람이나 것이 도움을 주지 않거나 일을 더 쉽게 만들어주지 않을 때 사용합니다. 보통 도움의 의지가 없거나 도움이 되지 않을 때 씁니다.

완곡하게 비판할 때 자주 쓰입니다. 'an unhelpful comment'는 도움이 안 되는 말을 뜻합니다. 'useless'보다는 약한 표현입니다.
