この表現は、自分が誰かをからかおうとして逆に自分が笑いものになることを表します。状況が想定外に自分に返ってきた時に使います。

ドッキリや冗談が裏目に出たときによく使います。“the joke is on you”のように、誰が逆転して笑われたかを強調する形で使われます。
