무언가를 힘껏 또는 반복적으로 찢거나 잡아당기다(보통 손이나 발톱으로). 깊이 괴롭히는 감정이나 마음의 아픔을 나타낼 때도 쓴다.

'tear at the paper', 'the dog tears at the bone'처럼 물리적 행동과 감정('guilt tore at him') 둘 다에 쓰임. 단순 'tear'보다 거칠고 절박한 뉘앙스.
