「的外れ」や「見当違い」は、意見や答えなどが正確でなく、期待した結果や真実から外れていることを指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

意見や答えが誤っている場合によく使います。「way off the mark」は大きく外れている、「not far off the mark」はほぼ正解、「a little off the mark」は少し外れているという意味になります。
