Definition

大きく失敗する、深刻な問題や事故に遭うこと。誰かや何かが災難やトラブルに遭った時によく使う。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

やや堅い、文学的な熟語で、日常会話ではあまり使われません。思いがけない失敗や事故を表す時に使います。人や物事の両方に使えます（'The plan came to grief'）。『悲しみに暮れる』とは異なります。
