শব্দটি সবসময় রূপক অর্থে ব্যবহার হয়, কখনও শারীরিক ঠান্ডার অর্থে নয়। সাধারণত 'কাউকে cold shoulder দেওয়া' বলতে কারও প্রতি ইচ্ছাকৃত অবজ্ঞার আচরণ বোঝায়।
