이미 존재하는 것을 바탕으로 더 발전시키거나 확장하는 것. 이전의 업적이나 아이디어를 토대로 추가하는 경우에 사용함.

공식적·학술적·업무적 맥락에서 자주 쓰임. 'ideas', 'work', 'experience', 'knowledge' 뒤에 많이 옴. 무(無)에서 시작하는 것이 아님을 주의.
