ある言葉や表現が厳密ではなく、比喩的または特殊な意味で使われていることを示す言い方です。

主に書き言葉やフォーマルな場面で使われます。「so to speak」と同様の使い方ですが、口語ではあまり見られません。

He became the leader, as it were, of the group.

彼はグループの**いわば**リーダーとなった。
