왕이나 지도자처럼 중요한 자리나 책임에서 내려오는 것. 중요한 역할이나 책임을 포기할 때도 쓴다.

'abdicating the throne'처럼 왕이나 리더가 자리나 책임을 내려놓을 때 주로 쓰며, 단순히 직업을 그만두는 의미는 아님. 비유적으로 'abdicating responsibility'처럼 책임을 포기하는 의미도 있음.
