এই শব্দটি 'wife'-এর বহুবচন, অর্থাৎ বিবাহিত নারীদের বোঝায় যারা তাদের স্বামীর সাথে বিবাহবন্ধনে আবদ্ধ।

'wife' একজন নারীর জন্য, 'wives' একাধিক নারীর জন্য ব্যবহার হয়। "husbands and wives" বা "their wives" এর মতো বাক্যে এই শব্দটি সাধারণ।
