현대 영어에서는 단독으로 거의 쓰이지 않고, 'kitchenware', 'software' 등 복합어에 많이 등장한다. 혼자 쓰면 다소 격식지거나 오래된 느낌. 복수형 'wares'는 시장의 물건, 판매품을 뜻함. 'wear'(입다), 'where'(장소)와 혼동 주의.
