यह आमतौर पर uncountable noun होता है: 'some sand' या 'a lot of sand' कहा जाता है, 'a sand' नहीं। आम जोड़ हैं 'sand beach', 'sand dune' और 'sandcastle'। Verb के रूप में 'sand' का मतलब sandpaper से सतह को चिकना करना होता है, लेकिन noun वाला प्रयोग कहीं ज़्यादा आम है।
