Emsal, gelecekteki durumlara örnek veya rehber olarak kullanılan, geçmişteki bir olay, eylem veya karardır. Genellikle hukuk veya resmi kararlarda kullanılır.

Genellikle hukuk ve resmi ortamlarda kullanılır: 'emsal oluşturmak', 'emsali takip etmek', 'emsalsiz'. 'Precedence' (öncelik) ile karıştırmayın.
