अक्सर बहुवचन ('pebbles') में इस्तेमाल होता है। आम तौर पर 'beach', 'river', 'path' आदि के साथ प्रयोग होता है। 'stones' (बड़े या खुरदरे) और 'sand' (बहुत बारीक) से अलग है। शायद ही कभी रूपक रूप में इस्तेमाल होता है।
