生物のDNAや遺伝子に起こる変化で、見た目や機能に違いが現れることもあります。自然に起きる場合や外部要因による場合があります。

主に科学や医療の分野（特に遺伝学や生物学）で使われます。「genetic mutation」「random mutation」のような英語表現も登場します。日常会話ではあまり使われません。
