大きな都市やその周辺に関連する事柄について使われます。特に、その都市が地域の中心である場合に使います。

主に都市計画や人口統計の説明、施設や生活などの文脈で使います。“metropolitan area” や “metropolitan lifestyle” のような表現でよく見られます。小都市や地方には使いません。
