Definition

何かを作るための物質や素材。布や服の生地、または勉強・執筆・議論に使う情報や内容も指すことがある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

技術や日常、学術分野でよく使われる。‘raw material’（原材料）、‘building material’（建築材料）、‘reading material’（教材）、‘course material’（講義資料）などが一般的。布の場合「生地」や「布地」も使うが、幅広く「素材」「材料」も使う。「materialistic（物質主義的）」とは意味が異なるので注意。
