알파벳의 A, B, C처럼 단어를 만들 때 쓰는 문자들을 말한다. 또한, 누군가에게 보내는 편지를 의미할 수도 있다.

'letters'는 학습 시에는 주로 '글자(알파벳)' 의미이고, 편지나 공식 문서에서는 '편지' 의미로 쓰인다. '대문자(capital letters)', '항의 편지(letters of complaint)' 등 표현에 나올 수 있다. 'lyrics(가사)'와 혼동하지 않도록 주의.
