本能とは、生まれつき備わっていて、意識的に考えたり学習したりせずに自然と現れる感じ方や行動のことです。動物や人が自然にとる反応を指します。

"by instinct（本能で）"、"animal instinct（動物の本能）"、"motherly instinct（母性本能）"のような表現でよく使います。"instinct"は生まれつきの性質を強調し、"intuition（直感）"よりも自動的な印象があります。「本能がある」「本能に従う」という使い方が一般的です。
