探偵は、主に警察官などで、事件を調査して解決する人です。また、秘密裏に情報を集める人も指します。

「detective」は警察の刑事や私立探偵の両方に使われます。小説やドラマで事件を解決するキャラクターとしてもよく登場します。学術調査などには使いません。
