Definition

国勢調査とは、政府が国内や地域に住む全ての人の情報を集めて数える公式な調査です。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に政府や報道、学術分野で使われ、主に全国規模の人口調査を指します。名詞として使い、「to census」として動詞形はほとんど使いません。

The government does a census every ten years.

政府は10年ごとに**国勢調査**を実施します。

Some people worry about privacy when the census asks personal questions.
