এই শব্দটি সাধারণত পুরাতন যুগের যুদ্ধ, জলদস্যু গল্প এবং সামরিক ইতিহাসে ব্যবহৃত অস্ত্র বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। আজকাল সাধারণত 'guns' বা নির্দিষ্ট 'artillery' বলা হয়। 'canon' (নীতি বা সংকলন) শব্দটির সঙ্গে মিশিয়ে ফেলবেন না।
