ある出来事や予定の前に、事前に何かを済ませておくこと。計画や準備の場面で使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「前もって」は動詞の後について、「前もって知らせてください」など準備や計画の文脈で使います。遠い過去には使いません。
