原子は、元素の性質をすべて持つ最小の単位です。すべての物質はこの原子からできています。

「原子」は主に科学や教育で使われます。比喩的に「ほんのわずか」という意味でも用いられます。「原子核」「原子を分裂させる」などの表現と一緒に使われます。
