주로 연극에서 사용하지만, 일상 상황에도 씀. 조금 부정적인 뉘앙스이며, 예의 없거나 이기적일 때 사용. 'upstaging the lead'와 같은 표현이 있음. 'upstage'(무대 뒤)와 혼동 금지.
