困難な問題や強い相手、状況に直面すること。または、直接競争したり対抗したりすること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

カジュアルな会話で、困難や競争について言う時によく使われます。'up against a deadline'（締め切りに迫られる）のように使われ、物理的な位置には使いません。
