他に選択肢がほとんどないときに、何かや誰かに頼ること。幸運や状況に期待することが多い。特に不確かさがある場合に使われる。

「Trust to」はややフォーマルまたは文学的で、「trust to luck」などの表現でよく使われます。自分でコントロールできないものに頼るニュアンスです。日常会話では「count on」「rely on」の方が自然。

We had to trust to luck when we took that shortcut.
