Definition

古いものや使われなくなったものの代わりとなること。以前のものを完全に置き換える意味があります。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に法的・公式文書や技術的な文章で使う堅い表現です。「取って代わる」は「完全に置き換える」ニュアンスがあります。「precedes（先行する）」とは違う意味です。
