Definition

誰かを好意的に見る、あるいは幸運が味方することを意味します。親しみを込めて笑いかける場合にも使われます。

書き言葉やフォーマルな場面で「幸運が味方した」という意味で使われます。単に「笑いかける」という意味での使い方は少ないです。

Luck seemed to smile on him during the competition.

大会の間、運が彼に**味方して**いたようだった。
