Definition

누군가나 무언가의 출입이나 참여를 막는 것. 감정적으로 마음을 닫거나, 스포츠에서 상대팀이 점수를 못 내게 막는 경우에도 쓴다.

직접적(물리적)과 비유적(감정적) 모두 사용: 'shut out of the room'(방 밖에 두다), 'shut out your feelings'(감정을 닫다). 스포츠에서는 상대팀을 무득점으로 막을 때 쓴다. 'exclude', 'block'와 유사.

They shut out the cold by closing the window.
