Definition

恐怖や驚きで人や動物が突然身を引く、あるいは後ずさることを表します。特に予想外の出来事やものに対する反応です。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

物語や文章でよく使われ、特に動物（馬など）が恐れて急に動く様子を表します。日常会話では「飛びのく」「後ずさる」などがよく使われます。「shy」は形容詞で「恥ずかしがり屋」とも異なります。
