書かれたものに線を引いて消す、または何かをやっとの思いで得ること。

カジュアルな表現で、実際の紙の文字などを消すときによく使われます。'scratch out a living'は「なんとか生計を立てる」という苦労の意味を持つ。'scratch'や'cross out'とは違います。
