人々が真実だと信じている、または主張していることについて話すときに使われます。特に確かな証拠がない場合によく使います。直接の経験ではなく評判に基づく情報を導入することが多いです。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

フォーマルで学術的な表現。ニュースや歴史、研究の文脈で多用される。'reputed to be/have' の形で、確証はないがそうだとされる事実を述べる時に使う。'reported to' とは異なり、証拠がないことが多い。個人的な意見には使わない。
