鳥がくちばしで羽を整えること、または人が自分の見た目や身だしなみに過度に気を使うこと。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
鳥の場合は普通の習性だが、人に使うと自意識や自己満足、見た目にこだわりすぎているニュアンスがある。「preening in front of the mirror」は自分に酔っている印象。
