杭（くい）

Definition

建物や橋、桟橋を支えるために地面や水中に深く打ち込まれる長くて丈夫な杭のこと。

主に建設や海洋工事など専門的な場面で使われます。「dock pilings」「bridge pilings」などのように複数形で用いられることが多いです。日常の小さい棒には使いません。

The bridge is held up by concrete pilings.

橋はコンクリートの**杭**で支えられています。

Workers drove wooden pilings into the riverbed.
