अक्सर हल्के, दोहराए जाने वाले और नियमित ध्वनि के लिए; विशेष रूप से बारिश ('the pattering of rain') या छोटे तेज़ कदमों के लिए ('pattering feet') कहा जाता है। बड़े शोर के लिए नहीं। अकसर वर्णनात्मक लेखन में मिलता है।
