Atingir alguém de forma tão forte que a pessoa sente que não consegue lidar; pode ser por emoções, tarefas ou força física.

Usado sobretudo com emoções ('overwhelms with sadness/joy') ou para excesso de tarefas. Expressões comuns: 'overwhelms me/her', 'overwhelms the senses'. Um pouco formal; em situações informais diz-se 'é demais'. Não confundir com 'overcome' (superar).
