Atingir alguém de forma tão intensa que a pessoa sente que não consegue lidar; pode ser por emoções, tarefas ou força física.

Muito usado com emoções ('overwhelms with sadness/joy'), ou para muitas tarefas. Combinações comuns: 'overwhelms me/her', 'overwhelms the senses'. É um pouco formal; em português se diz mais 'é demais' em situações informais. Não confundir com 'overcome' (superar).
