複雑な計画を立てて指揮する人物や、そのような計画を陰で操る人を指します。また、大きな出来事を裏から操作する場合にも使われます。

『黒幕』は犯罪やビジネスの裏で指揮をとる人に使われます。『mastermind behind』は「～の黒幕」という意味です。動詞では「裏で指揮する」となります。
