スポーツ、とくに野球で最初に行動する人、例えば最初に打席に立つバッターを指します。一般的には何かの最初の部分や始まりも意味します。

野球では「先頭打者（leadoff batter）」と使い、スポーツ以外ではあまり使われません。日常会話よりも公式またはスポーツ用語です。

The leadoff batter hit a home run.
