大事ではないことをして、待ち時間などを過ごすこと。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

直訳ではなく慣用句で使われ、実際に「殺す」という意味はない。「時間をつぶす前に」や「ただ時間をつぶしている」などの言い回しがよく使われる。
