Definition

要石はアーチの中央上部に置かれる石で、全体を支える役割があります。また、比喩的に、何かの中で最も重要な部分を指す言葉です。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

建築用語としては専門的ですが、比喩的には『keystone species（キーストーン種）』『keystone habit（キーストーン習慣）』のように、最も重要な要素として使われます。日常会話ではあまり使いません。
