Definition

収入より支出が多く、経済的に損をしている、もしくは借金がある状態を指します。

主にビジネスや家計で非公式に使われる表現です。'in the black'（黒字）と対義語です。色とは関係ありません。

If you spend more than you earn, you'll be in the red.

収入より多く使うと、**赤字で**なってしまいます。
